Abramson Family Portrait Session – Savannah, GA

You guys, I love family portraits. I’m not talking about stiff, posed, boring family photos. I’m talking about family photos where you can actually feel the love through the images.

I took these photos when I was in Savannah for my friend Lindy’s wedding. I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. Not only was the weather perfect, but  I feel like I got to know the Abramson family so well. We had so much fun! And the photos oozed happiness.

During the shoot, we got Grandma in there too. And we even ran into my handsome friend, Austin the Golden Retriever!

All in all, a perfect session (complete with beach balls and giant balloons, of course!).

10 on 10 Collaboration Project, Post 12

Well, today’s post officially marks a year of doing the 10 on 10 project with the other photographers all around the country!  Yay!

I’m happy to say that I have decided to continue doing the 10 on 10 post every month, as it keeps me motivated to do my own work.  Although, I’ll admit that I took lots of photos last month, nothing quite made the cut for today’s post.  SO, I’m showing you some more photos from my trip abroad to Amsterdam, Paris, and London.

Take me back. Someone just take me back.

Pet Portraits by CLB Creative

As most of you know, I have been creating these pet portraits in my free time since last November. I started it as something I thought would make me a little extra cash for Christmas gifts, but it has now spiraled into it’s own thing.  I get at least 2 requests per week, and each week it has been gaining momentum.  These have now started to get added to people’s wedding registries, and someone even got a tattoo of theirs!  The enthusiasm has been very humbling and thrilling, to say the least.

The thing is, they are the perfect gift for any pet lover.  Whether it’s a dog, cat, fish, or any other furry friend, the recipient gets a personalized, thoughtful, and completely unique portrait of their companion.

Here are a few I have done so far.  If interested, you can purchase them on my Etsy shop or you can message me directly on my Contact page!

10 on 10 Collaboration Project, Post 11

I can’t believe it has almost been a year of doing this project!

I’m going to be honest, I haven’t had much time last month to take personal photos. However, I have some exciting news!  As most of you know, in addition to shooting my own work, during the week I work at Oh Joy! where I wear many hats. One of those hats includes shooting a lot of content for the blog. Basically, it’s the best job ever because some days Joy says, “Casey, can you go get some doughnuts, and then take pictures of the doughnuts, and then we can eat the doughnuts?” Or other times it’s like, “Casey, can you come hang out with my adorable family and take photos for my baby announcement?”

Yeah, it’s a pretty great job.

What’s even greater is we are now in the thick of creating an Oh Joy book, and I’m getting the opportunity to take photos for it!  It’s pretty much the coolest/most daunting task I have ever had the privilege to be a part of.

So, this month’s 10-on-10 is dedicated to Oh Joy!, and includes 10 of my favorite photos I took for her blog last month.

Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco Bridge Engagement Session: Anita + Daniel

Anita and Daniel are getting married in South Korea.  Anita asked me to take a few engagement photos of them before the nuptials, so we decided on Arroyo Seco Bridge in Pasadena and the park below it for the dramatic landscape.  They brought their dog, Bailey, along to the shoot, because sometimes the photos don’t feel complete without the whole family there!

Congratulations, you two!  It was so great meeting you!

Griffith Park Engagement Session : Shahna + Ryan

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!  I’m waiting until tomorrow to celebrate, mostly because someone has to help CVS clear out the discounted candy boxes.

Now onto the gooey love stuff:

Any wedding photographer would want to work with a couple like Shahna and Ryan.  They are laid back, fun, and up for anything — even when that “anything” involves climbing uphill in nice clothes.

So maybe I should rephrase: Couples beware, as I might literally make you climb mountains for the perfect shot.

When I first met Shahna, we talked about what she and Ryan liked to do together.  She mentioned wanting to take her engagement photos somewhere in nature, specifically a woodsy area since they love to go camping.  The first place that came to mind was the small but scenic Cedar Grove in Griffith Park.  We also decided to go to Ferndell Nature Trail, where I shot the Moonrise Kingdom shoot.

We had a great time (and a great workout!).  Congrats you two, I can’t wait for the wedding in August!

PS that amazing Save the Date plaque was handmade by the lovely and talented Julia Wester.

Holga, A Love Story

One of my favorite classes in college was my Medium Format class I took my sophomore year.  There was only one assignment: take photos of whatever you want with a Holga camera.  This was the class where I really got into the groove of developing my own film and learning darkroom techniques.

You really have to use your imagination when shooting on a $20 camera made of plastic.  Light leaks, natural blur, and color shifts occur.  And since everything is manual, it’s also easy to make double exposures either by choice or accident.

I sold my Holga when I graduated. Although I was still in love with this toy camera and it’s ability to take perfectly imperfect images, I really had no clue when I would be in a darkroom again.  And the cost of processing 120 film is extraordinarily expensive, so I felt like it would be put to better use in someone else’s hands.

Fast forward to 2012, when I had really decided to fully pursue photography.  I started craving a Holga again.  I found one on Amazon for $18 (don’t buy a $60 one from Urban Outfitters– it’s a rip off). I ordered some film along with and and decided to start shooting with it as a supplement to my focus on digital photography.

I finished several rolls of film over the course of the past year. I took my Holga with me when the situation was special, but taking my 5d along wouldn’t have been the best choice.  I developed all the film in one go this week, and I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.  Here are some of my favorites– a trip to Six Flags, camping, a horseback ride in Hawaii, and a dear friend’s wedding. And the best part was, everything was scanned and digitized so I never had to step foot in a dark room!

Palos Verdes Estates and Malaga Cove Engagement Session : Stacy + Aaron

Stacy and Aaron got engaged right before Christmas.  They chose Malaga Cove Library near their home in Redondo Beach for their engagement session.  It was a chilly, cloudy day, which didn’t look too great in person but made an ideal day to take pictures.  Malaga Cove is was such a fantastic location to shoot I may just bring everyone there from now on!

We explored around Malaga Cove and also took some pictures at their home with their adorable Poodle, Oggie.  (By the way– Doesn’t Oggie kinda look like he’s rockin’ Mr. T’s hair style?  That mohawk is hilarious!)

I had a great time photographing these two!  They were SO in cute together, constantly teasing each other and tickling and laughing a whole lot.  That made my job really easy.  There were so many great pictures of them that I had a very VERY difficult time narrowing down my favorites.

Thanks Aaron and Stacy for a fun day and congratulations on your engagement!

At Least I Can Always Get My Dog to Pose for Me

One thing I’m learning quickly as I build my business is plans can change.  I originally had three photoshoots planned for this weekend and one by one this week they all fell through.

Luckily, I still got to get in some good camera practice in with my dog, Olive.  She’s always willing to strike a pose.   That is, if I have something for her in return.

Behold, the power of bacon treats.

Downtown LA + Disney Concert Hall Honeymoon Session : Paula and Carlos:

Newlyweds Paula and Carlos were visiting LA from Chile, and while they were in town they wanted a photo session to remember their stay.  I met Paula through a good friend and incredible photographer, Matei, after she contacted him a few weeks ago looking for an LA photographer.  Matei was out of the country while she was here, and he kindly referred her to me, because I’m cool and stuff, too.  Friends helping friends.

Paula and Carlos decided they wanted to take pictures somewhere with incredible architecture.  LA has a ton of stunning architecture, but no where quite compares to Disney Concert Hall in Downtown LA.  So that’s where we met.

You’ll be able to tell from the photos that these two are very much in love.  I hardly had to direct them at all– all those kisses, twirls, laughs and moments came naturally.  Paula and Carlos had a great sense of humor, too.  I asked them to kiss each other just once, and they said, “Now that we’re married, we don’t do that anymore.”  Hilarious!

Congratulations Paula and Carlos on tying the knot and thank you for meeting up with me to take these pictures.  I had so much fun!
