10 on 10 April 2015 : Hearst Castle and Nitt Witt Ridge in Cambria, CA

So, some of you may have realized that I didn’t have a 10 on 10 last month! I’m sorry about that. But to make up for it, this month I’m giving you 20 photos from my recent trip to Hearst Castle. Anthony and I also stopped over to see Nitt Witt Ridge, a house that was built completely out of shells, beer cans, and other garbage. Both places were incredible to see and were a nice contrast to each other. If you ever find yourself in beautiful Cambria, make sure to see both of these spots.

Be sure to check out the other 10 on 10-ers this month:

Joshua Tree Wedding : Kirk + Nikka

Wow. What a way to end my wedding season.

Kirk and Nikka’s wedding does not need much of an introduction. Their love for each other is so apparent that it radiates from the pictures. These two had been together for ten years— they met while moving into their freshman dorm!

Nikka planned this day down to the T, which you can see in every detail included below. It’s amazing how much work went into this day. I had a really hard time narrowing down these pictures, which I was able to capture alongside my super talented boyfriend turned second shooter. I will definitely be employing him again because he did a great job and I really loved bossing him around.

Congratulations, Kirk and Nikka!

Santa Barbara’s Historic Courthouse Wedding : Amanda + Charley

Wow. That’s the only word that I could think of when I first walked into the Santa Barbara Courthouse. When Amanda and Charley asked me to photograph their wedding, I certainly was not expecting a courthouse to be this insanely beautiful. From the intricate tile to the ironwork to the breathtaking Mural Room where they had their ceremony, it was like a candy land as a photographer. There were too many beautiful places for photos in one building.

I also could not have been any luckier to have met these two. Their friends and family were so warm and welcoming, and I instantly felt comfortable shooting them. And not only were A+C a gorgeous couple, but Charley at one point came up to me and said, “I trust you, just do your thing.” Having creative freedom like that just added to how much fun I had photographing this day, and allowed me to create some images that I’m really happy with.

The reception was held later that evening at The Lark restaurant, where everyone celebrated over shared family-style courses, and danced well into the night.

Thank you so much for choosing me as your photographer, Amanda and Charley! I wish you both all the happiness in the world.

Walnut Grove Wedding in Moorpark | Shahna and Ryan | Los Angeles Wedding Photographer

Shahna and Ryan got married at this beautiful venue in Moorpark, and I was so happy to be there to photograph it. I’m pretty sure this day had one of the most epic sunsets of all time — and I don’t use the term “epic” lightly. The day went so smoothly, and I honestly have never had so much fun at a reception as I did that night. It was dance-off after dance-off, this group really knew how to party!

Special thanks to my wonderful second photographer Sara Panman who captured all the moments I missed– I am so grateful I had her talents there with me! All the little details came so perfectly together thanks to the styling talents of Julia Sir Wester (also the talented stylist for Oh Joy!). And of course, it all wouldn’t have gone so smoothly without the help of Mia Bella Weddings.

Thank you Shahna and Ryan for letting me be such a big part of your day!

Los Angeles Old Hollywood Wedding: Ashley + Bryan

Way back when Bryan and Ashley asked me to photograph their wedding, I already knew they were a cool couple (their engagement photos were taken in a tattoo parlor, after all). So I was really excited to photograph them in general because it gave me excuses to hang out with them.

But, I was really excited for their wedding day. First, the ceremony was sure to be as sweet as they are as a couple (sweet as in both the nice way and the dude! sweet! kind of way). Second, it was at a venue I had known about for a long time, but had never had the opportunity to see in person. A lot of photographers have shot the outside of it, but few get to photograph the inside of it. That’s because this venue was Katy Perry’s old house when she was married to Russell Brand, and now it is Bryan and Ashley’s friend Kendra’s house. Third, they were doing a sparkler send off.

So here are some photos from the day I shot Bryan and Ashley’s wedding at this gorgeous old Hollywood McMansion, on the longest day of the year, surrounded by some of the nicest group of people, celebrating. This must be how all those Disney Princesses feel like every day.

Tattoo Parlor and Record Shop Engagement Session: Bryan + Ashley

Sometimes a couple comes along and they have the best ideas for photo shoots. This was a really fun one.

When I plan engagement shoots, I always try and make sure we shoot something that the couple really loves to do. When I met Bryan and Ashley, and found out that Bryan was in a band, I suggested we shoot their engagement session at a record store here in LA. About a week before our planned shoot, Ashley mentioned that they wanted to get tattoos together and wondered if I could document that as part of the engagement session.  I, of course, thought this was a BRILLIANT idea. I had seen a few engagement sessions in record stores, but never had I seen one of a couple getting tattoos together.

We went to Origami Vinyl on Sunset then walked up the street to El Classico Tattoo. B+A decided to get the number 21 tattooed on their left hands, for the date of their wedding, June 21st. We also happened to shoot this on February 21st!

I seriously can’t wait to shoot their wedding this summer, on the night of the solstice.  If these photos are any indication, it will be a really awesome ceremony.

Griffith Park Engagement Session : Shahna + Ryan

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!  I’m waiting until tomorrow to celebrate, mostly because someone has to help CVS clear out the discounted candy boxes.

Now onto the gooey love stuff:

Any wedding photographer would want to work with a couple like Shahna and Ryan.  They are laid back, fun, and up for anything — even when that “anything” involves climbing uphill in nice clothes.

So maybe I should rephrase: Couples beware, as I might literally make you climb mountains for the perfect shot.

When I first met Shahna, we talked about what she and Ryan liked to do together.  She mentioned wanting to take her engagement photos somewhere in nature, specifically a woodsy area since they love to go camping.  The first place that came to mind was the small but scenic Cedar Grove in Griffith Park.  We also decided to go to Ferndell Nature Trail, where I shot the Moonrise Kingdom shoot.

We had a great time (and a great workout!).  Congrats you two, I can’t wait for the wedding in August!

PS that amazing Save the Date plaque was handmade by the lovely and talented Julia Wester.

Savannah, GA Wedding – Megan and Chris

At the end of September I had the opportunity to photograph Megan and Chris’s beautiful wedding in Savannah, Georgia.  I was so excited to not only shoot this incredible wedding, but also have the opportunity to see my friends and family that live there.

The wedding was held at The Mansion on Forsyth Park, and I don’t think I could have asked for better venue, weather or scenery.

Special thanks to the incredibly talented Shannon Christopher who helped me photograph the ceremony and all the vendors who contributed to making this day go so smoothly.

Megan’s amazing wedding cake is by Savannah’s Hall of Cakes.

Congratulations, Megan and Chris!

Trash the Dress on El Matador Beach, CA

As a photographer, I’m obsessed with Pinterest.  I get so many ideas and inspiration from Pinterest, and here’s one of them.  I’ve been seeing a trend of Trash the Dress photo shoots pop up a lot on Pinterest lately, and I loved the idea of making a total mess of something pristine.  There’s a lot of beauty in that.

Surprise, not many brides are willing to destroy a dress that they paid so much for.  So I decided to take matters into my own hands and buy a used wedding dress off of Ebay.  I had asked my lovely friend, Amanda, to pose for me.  Serendipitously, the $5 dress fit her like a glove.

We took our shoot to El Matador Beach in Malibu.  We arrived at the perfect time at dusk, and Amanda dug into the sand, rolled around, and got dunked in the waves several times.  She did her job perfectly, and didn’t complain once even though she was soaking wet and covered in sand by the end of it.

I had so much fun doing this, it was something I had wanted to shoot for a while and I was so happy with how it all fell into place.  Thanks Amanda for being a beautiful model!

(PS. I did that hairdo!  I think I could make a second career out of doing crazy updos!)
